Royal Caribbean Settlement, over 1 Million to Estate of George Smith

Last June everyone wondered why Jennifer Hagel Smith settled with Royal Caribbean. I George smith RCguess there were over 1 million reasons why Jennifer Hagel Smith settled the law suit with Royal Caribbean following the disappearance of her fiancee, George Allen Smith IV.

Royal Caribbean Cruises has agreed to pay more than $1 million to the estate of a Connecticut man who vanished from his honeymoon cruise of the Mediterranean in 2005.

The Florida-based company will pay $950,000 to the estate of George Allen Smith IV and reimburse his widow, Jennifer Hagel Smith, for legal costs up to $110,000. Hagel Smith will start a fund in memory of her husband with an initial donation of $25,000 that the cruise line will match, according to a copy of the settlement obtained by The Associated Press. (Fox News)

Dana Pretzer interview with Bree Smith on Scared Monkeys radio (Dec. 7, 2006), sister of missing George Smith. (Play podcast, go to time stamp: 66:30)

It is hard to believe that is what one’s life is worth. The rush to a settlement had raised the George_Smith5eyebrows of many who followed the case. What is most puzzling is the continued admissions that some how Jennifer Hagel Smith will be able to use any records that she gains from Royal Caribbean against them in the future. I am sure their is very fine and legal print that Royal Caribbean attorneys put in this settlement that states otherwise.

Hagel Smith noted that the settlement also gives her access for the first time to records kept by the cruise line, including vessel logs, security reports, door activity records, photographs, witness statements and correspondence with the FBI.

“My single goal continues to be to find answers regarding how George died,” Hagel Smith said in a statement. “Reaching a settlement in this case in no way shuts down the investigation.”

Melinda Duckett Lawsuit Against Nancy Grace Moved to Federal Court

The lawsuit against CNN and Nancy Grace filed by the family of Melinda Duckett has been moved from Circuit Court to Federal Court.

A wrongful death lawsuit filed against CNN’s Nancy Grace, claiming she pushed the mother of a missing toddler to suicide through aggressive questioning on her talk show, has been moved to federal court.

The case was moved from Circuit Court in the Lake County seat of Tavares to U.S. District Court in Ocala, according to a notice of removal filed Dec. 20.

Lawyers for Grace and Atlanta-based CNN asked that the case be transferred to federal court, a move allowed when opposing parties in a lawsuit reside or are headquartered in different states. The provision ensures a state court will not be biased in favor of a party from its own state. (Gainesville Sun)

The lawsuit also names Joshua Duckett, Trenton Duckett’s father as well. The Eubanks, who filed the lawsuit on behalf of the estate of Melinda Duckett is also asking for a court ordered accounting of the Trenton Duckett Family Charitable Trust Fund.

Trenton’s father, Joshua Duckett, who was estranged from his wife, also was named in the lawsuit, though he had filed a response in Circuit Court demanding that he be dropped from the case.

The Eubanks want a court-ordered accounting of the Trenton Duckett Family Charitable Trust Fund, which Joshua Duckett established to solicit donations to help him search for his missing son. Their lawsuit said they “seek to ensure that any and all funds donated for locating [Trenton] are used for said purposes and not for any ill-conceived or improper purpose . . .”

The fund is run through helpfindtrenton.com. (Orlando Sentinel)

According to Don Blake of Limington, ME, he states that he positively saw Coreen Wiese hitchhiking on November 8.

Don Blake of Limington said he is positive he saw Wiese on Wednesday, Nov. 8.

“I saw the girl the day she disappeared,” Blake said. “She was hitchhiking.”

Blake said he was traveling east on Route 25, toward Portland, when he saw a teenage girl hitchhiking sometime between 10 and 10:30 a.m. that day. He has told his account of the sighting to the FBI.

The girl’s hair looked “wet and straggly,” Blake said. He recalled thinking that the girl looked young to be hitching a ride. After seeing published photos, he said, he has no doubt the girl he spotted was Wiese.

He said she was hitchhiking toward Cornish. Blake said a blue van pulled off the road near Town Line Billiards, a short distance from the bridge. The driver rolled down a window, and she walked toward the van, Blake said. (KeepMECurrent)
