Small Plane Piloted By NY Philanthropist, George F. Baker III, Missing Off Nantucket

A small plane piloted by 66 year old George F. Baker III, a New York Philanthropist is missing off Nantucket, MA.

The twin-engine Beechcraft was flying at 200 feet and was about 2 1/2 miles from Nantucket Memorial Airport when it disappeared from radar around 4:45 p.m., said Jim Peters, an FAA spokesman.

The plan was en route from Teterboro Airport in New Jersey, Peters said. Baker filed a flight plan through the Islip Flight Service Station on Long Island, Peters said.

He said the pilot spoke to FAA air traffic controllers at Otis Air Force Base on Cape Cod shortly before the plane disappeared. The plane already had been cleared to land at Nantucket airport, and the pilot did not issue a distress signal.

According to Baker’s wife, he is an experienced pilot who had been flying since he was 18.

Coast Guard spokeswoman Kelly Newlin said there was no immediate sign of any wreckage in the water or on land, although police told the Coast Guard they saw a red light in the water near the airport’s runway.

“We still haven’t found anything — no debris,” she said Friday morning.

Nantucket police officers found a First Aid kit, a bottle of aviation lubricant and “a couple pieces of plastic” near Nobadeer Beach, but no other debris was immediately discovered, said Police Chief William Pittman.

“I don’t know if they came from the airplane or not,” Pittman added. “There’s nothing that points directly at that plane.” He said police planned to resume their search Saturday morning.

Teresa Halbach Investigation: Steven Avery Arrested,DNA & Fingerprints Submission

The search still goes Teresa Halbach and she is still considered a missing person. Steven AveryHowever, Steven Avery has been arrested on an unrelated charge. It also appears that investigators have gathered a great deal of evidence from the Avery Salvage Yard. According to reports from investigators the following news was stated, “the State Crime Lab believes evidence it’s analyzing is human in origin, but he would not be more specific.”

Teresa Halbach is still a missing person but her disappearance has now resulted in Steven Avery’s arrest on unrelated firearms charges and what the Avery family calls a “round-up” of family to submit DNA and other evidence.

Calumet County Sheriff Jerry Pagel said “significant” evidence was gathered in the past 24 hours at Avery Salvage Yard in northern Manitowoc County. He said the State Crime Lab believes evidence it’s analyzing is human in origin, but he would not be more specific.

According to WBAY2 Steven Avery was arrested on a separate weapons possession charge.

Ken Kratz, the special prosecutor on the case, said Avery was arrested Wednesday afternoon for being a felon on possession of a firearm. A criminal complaint says a .22-caliber semi-automatic rifle and .50-caliber black powder muzzle loader were found in the bedroom of a trailer at 12932 Avery Road, along with magazines addressed to Steven Avery, leading investigators to believe he was staying in that trailer. They also found eleven spent shell casings in a garage.

From The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel; Avery: ‘I’m going to jail … I can’t talk to you no more’

Steven Avery, who has been a focus of an investigation into the disappearance of a 25-year-old woman, told the Journal Sentinel shortly before 1 p.m. today that he was being taken into custody. “I’m going to jail. I can’t talk to you no more,” Avery said.

Man wrongly convicted now in center of new investigation

Since Saturday, investigators have searched the 40-acre Avery’s Auto Salvage lot near Mishicot and the family’s residences, seizing Avery’s car and the salvage yard’s flatbed truck in the hunt for signs of Halbach. The truck has since been returned.

“Is it a coincidence that this happened on his property? Maybe it’s just a coincidence. Maybe there’s more to do with it,” Halbach said when interviewed at his sister’s home in Hilbert, next door to their parents. “We trust that the (sheriff’s officials) will do a thorough search and investigation and eventually it will lead to answers.”

Teresa Marie Halbach’s SUV found near Avery yard

According to The Green Bay Press Gazette, the SUV vehicle of the missing Teresa Marie Halbach was found on Saturday in a gravel pit near the auto salvage yard operated by Steven Avery.

Searchers Saturday found the vehicle of a missing 25-year-old St. John woman in a rural gravel pit near an auto salvage yard operated by a man convicted of a 1985 sexual assault and exonerated by DNA evidence 18 years later, according to Manitowoc County Sheriff Ken Petersen. The auto salvage yard is owned by Steven Avery’s family.

Steven Avery, whose family owns the salvage yard, told the Herald Times Reporter late Saturday that he has “no idea” what happened to free-lance photographer Teresa Marie Halbach.

“I don’t know what happened to her,” he said in a telephone interview from his father’s vacation property near Crivitz. “That’s the honest to God truth. I just wish they’d find her, so we’d know what really happened.”

Avery commented as officers scoured his property between Mishicot and Maribel, where Halbach’s dark green 1999 Toyota Rav4 was found. Petersen said the presence of investigators on Avery’s property could be a “coincidence.”

Steven Avery denied knowing how Teresa Marie Halbach’s vehicle got into the “pit”.

Avery said he last saw the missing woman driving away from his rural property on Monday afternoon, after she had taken photos of one of his vehicles for Auto Trader magazine.

Avery denied knowing how Halbach’s vehicle got into what he called “the pit,” a storage area for junk vehicles used in his family’s salvage business. Avery said he hasn’t been in the pit “in quite a while.”Halbach has been to his home about 15 times in the last year to take photos of his vehicles for Auto Trader, Avery said.

“It was always just ‘hi, how ya’ doing,’ that kind of thing,” Avery said. “It was just business.”

Grinstead is single and lives with her dog and cat. There was no clear sign of a struggle at her home, police said. But a broken lamp was found in her bedroom and her alarm clock was found under her bed.

No words can describe the thanks that families have and the rewarding feeling it provides to all when one sacrifices for people that have never met. The following is a story from one of out Scared Monkey members describing her first search ever. Congratulations Sunny in TX, we are all proud of your sacrifice to help others. Hear her story in her own words.

I sent in my volunteer membership application to TES a couple months ago. On Friday I was called to assist in a search for a missing 15 year old boy. He had been missing since just after school on Wednesday. He is 15 and has some learning disabilities. I had no idea what to expect so ….. I dressed in jeans, sneakers, a tee shirt and a long sleeve jeans shirt ….. took my water bottles and headed out at 7:30 Saturday morning.

I arrived and much to my surprise Joe Huston was the person in charge of this search/rescue operation…..a man we all know and have great respect for. And my respect has risen even higher after having worked with him. He is a kind, sincere, friendly, warm and a very focused and dedicated man.

All the TES people … (all volunteers) are fantastic. You immediately feel you are part of a very loving family. Each of them were warm, friendly caring and FOCUSED people.
After filling out my paper work .. ( this is done with each search you assist in) and meeting the other volunteers… we wait for instructions. Joe and others were looking at aerial maps, consulting with family members and plotting the search.

About 9AM we were gathered together and explained the initial search would begin in the WOODS! Oh my!! I had been looking at the woods thinking I am sure not gonna be going in there! All the sudden …. this voice screamed in my soul …. OH YES YOU ARE! I thought I had been possessed by a demon!! Let me briefly explain…I am deathly afraid of snakes…even the rubber kind……terrified…can’t even look at the on the TV…. It is explained we will be walking a grid type pattern, each searcher about 10 feet apart from the person on the right and left of you..once we reach our destination ( a creek) we would pivot around the point person on the far left of us and then walk back to the road. We would continue to do this until this area was cleared unless we found ‘something’. I am thinking no way can I walk into those woods…just no way…why would I even want to walk in these woods?? Suddenly one of the volunteer’s says, “well at least we shouldn’t have to worry TOO MUCH about SNAKES as it was a very cool morning and they SHOULD not be out.” I was praying, Oh I hope to God the snakes know that bit of information!!! At that point I didn’t think I could go on. I was going to have to tell them I couldn’t do it …. suddenly it became very clear…. there was a lost child……perhaps hurt, in those woods…..no food, water or warm clothing…..that demon was changed into an angel with that thought… something inside me clicked and I knew I WAS going to walk into those woods!!

We took our places and began walking….keeping our lines as straight as possible…right into the woods…..within 10 feet it was so dense it was nearly impossible to see the person on your right or left…..one of the instructions we were given was to make sure you could see or at the very least hear them at all times….the safety of the searchers are paramont…..the spiny, thorny vines were tearing into our faces, tearing into our arms and right through our jeans..sticking in our hair and heads……but we kept on going….deeper and deeper….one of the experienced TES volunteers brought a machete and she walked ahead of us trying to cut a path….finally we reach the creek…..a head check is done there and several times throughout the search and we begin the pivot turn.

Rescuers were searching the Harlem River for a missing rower after power boat collision

According to the AP, rescuers are searching the Harlem River for a missing rower Monday after four members of a private rowing club went overboard following a collision with a power boat.

‘America’s Most Wanted’ helps on Nita Mayo case with Texas Equusearch

Americas Most Wanted sent film crews to Tuolumne County to film segments on the search for a Nevada woman, Nita Mayo, who has been missing for more than two months. The producers focused their story of Tim Miller and Texas Equusearch but featured the story about the missing Mayo and the search for her and other type of work Miller does.

Crews from the TV show “America’s Most Wanted” were in Tuolumne County over the weekend, filming a segment on the search for a Nevada woman, now missing for more than two months.

Producers say the show on the search for Nita Mayo will run in late November or early December.

Last weekend’s search was organized by Tim Miller, a Texas man who founded a horse-mounted search-and-rescue group, EquuSearch, in 2000 in memory of his daughter Laura who was abducted and murdered in 1984.

“America’s Most Wanted” producers focused their story on Miller and EquuSearch, but featured the story about the search for Mayo as the type of work Miller does.

Nita Mayo’s children flew out to California for the large scale search in hopes of finding clues to their mother’s whereabouts and at the very least gaining national exposure to the case.
