Teresa Marie Halbach’s SUV found near Avery yard

According to The Green Bay Press Gazette, the SUV vehicle of the missing Teresa Marie Halbach was found on Saturday in a gravel pit near the auto salvage yard operated by Steven Avery.

Searchers Saturday found the vehicle of a missing 25-year-old St. John woman in a rural gravel pit near an auto salvage yard operated by a man convicted of a 1985 sexual assault and exonerated by DNA evidence 18 years later, according to Manitowoc County Sheriff Ken Petersen. The auto salvage yard is owned by Steven Avery’s family.

Steven Avery, whose family owns the salvage yard, told the Herald Times Reporter late Saturday that he has “no idea” what happened to free-lance photographer Teresa Marie Halbach.

“I don’t know what happened to her,” he said in a telephone interview from his father’s vacation property near Crivitz. “That’s the honest to God truth. I just wish they’d find her, so we’d know what really happened.”

Avery commented as officers scoured his property between Mishicot and Maribel, where Halbach’s dark green 1999 Toyota Rav4 was found. Petersen said the presence of investigators on Avery’s property could be a “coincidence.”

Steven Avery denied knowing how Teresa Marie Halbach’s vehicle got into the “pit”.

Avery said he last saw the missing woman driving away from his rural property on Monday afternoon, after she had taken photos of one of his vehicles for Auto Trader magazine.

Avery denied knowing how Halbach’s vehicle got into what he called “the pit,” a storage area for junk vehicles used in his family’s salvage business. Avery said he hasn’t been in the pit “in quite a while.”Halbach has been to his home about 15 times in the last year to take photos of his vehicles for Auto Trader, Avery said.

“It was always just ‘hi, how ya’ doing,’ that kind of thing,” Avery said. “It was just business.”

Missing woman’s car found in junk lot, Salvage yard belongs to family of freed prisoner

As police searched for clues into the disappearance of Teresa Halbach, a small group of family members and friends discovered her car Saturday in a salvage yard owned by relatives of a man who served 18 years in prison on sexual assault charges before being exonerated.

The discovery sent about 100 police, firefighters and other emergency personnel with search warrants into the Manitowoc County salvage yard owned by the family of Steven Avery for the rest of the weekend.

Officials searched through hundreds of vehicles on the sprawling, remote property about four miles west of Mishicot.

Steven Avery has made comments that he fears the police are trying to pin the disappearance of Teresa Halbach on him. Avery’s lawyer, Walter Kelly, “said he is confident that his client had nothing to do with the woman’s disappearance.” Avery’s lawyer?

“I got a hunch the sheriff’s department is trying to put something on me,” said Avery, who had driven Saturday to his family’s cabin near Crivitz in Marinette County to butcher chickens during the weekend.

But authorities denied that they are interested only in Avery.

“If Avery is feeling that way, he’s mistaken,” Pagel said.

“It’s just not true,” responded Robert C. Hermann, an inspector at the sheriff’s department in Manitowoc County.

Calumet County is the lead agency in the case because Halbach was first reported missing from her home in Hilbert in Calumet County.

Avery’s lawyer, Walter Kelly, said he is confident that his client had nothing to do with the woman’s disappearance. But he said it is understandable that he would be concerned about the investigation.
