Search and rescue workers continue to look for missing persons and possible survivors in Greensburg, KS after severe weather and tornadoes desimated the town on Friday and over the weekend. At least 8 people have died in the Greensburg area from the violent weather; however, authorities are still optimistic that they will find survivors and continue to call it a “search and rescue” mission.
GREENSBURG, Kan. (AP) — Searchers went back to work Sunday looking for anyone who might have been trapped since a tornado wiped most of this south-central Kansas town off the map. “At this point, it’s still a search and rescue mission,” Kansas state trooper Ronald Knoefel said. “We don’t want to give up hope.”
Maj. Gen. Tod Bunting, the state’s adjutant general, said officials did not know how many people are missing.
“A lot of people have gone to other places and it’s difficult to track them down,” he said.
At least 10 people were known dead from weekend storms. Eight of them were in the Greensburg area and two others died elsewhere in Kansas – one during the Friday night storms that hammered Greensburg and one in a second round of storms late Saturday, state officials said.
The storms in Kansas were parts of a weekend of violent weather, with tornadoes also dashing across other parts of the Plains states late Saturday. And on Sunday, the National Weather Service posted a new tornado warning for south-central Kansas, saying a funnel cloud was spotted near Corwin, 65 miles southeast of Greensburg.
The Greensburg, KS area has just been destroyed as almost every thing in the town was destroyed. The town has literally been wiped off the map. Check out the video of the damage and devastation caused by the tornado.
Hewitt estimated 95 percent of the town of 1,500 was destroyed and predicted rescue efforts could take days as survivors could be trapped in basements and under rubble.
“This is one of the most devastating tornadoes we have had in Kansas,” said U.S. Rep. Jerry Moran.
At a shelter in neighboring Haviland, Cheryll Behm said her home in Greensburg is probably repairable, unlike the rest of the town.
“I am concerned Greensburg never will be built,” said Behm, a nurse’s aide at the Greensburg hospital. “There is no place to go back to work to. All of Main Street is gone.”

Houston officials have done an about face and reversed their initial decision not to search the landfill/landfills for missing Tynesha Stewart.
Authorities in Houston have approved spending up to $500,000 to search area landfills for the remains of a Texas A&M student whose ex-boyfriend confessed to killing her.
The request comes after angry complaints about the decision not to search for the remains of 19-year-old Tynesha Stewart, who disappeared last week.
Officials reversed their initial decisions to not search the landfills due to cost and improbable outcome of not finding her due to pressure and complaints brought up by black local leaders and activists. Personally, the Houston officials were crazy for not going forth with this search from the outset causing racial unrest especially when volunteer search team Texas EquuSearch had stated they would conduct the search at no cost.
Investigators reconsidered after several high-profile complaints from US Representative Sheila Jackson Lee, state Representative Sylvester Turner and community activist Quannel X. (KWTX)
However, the plans go forward to begin the search for Tynesha Stewart as soon as possibly Wednesday.
Plans are underway to conduct a series of searches for Tynesha Stewart, the Texas A&M coed believed to have been killed by her ex-boyfriend. However, those searches may be difficult after word that the 19-year-old’s body may have been dismembered and spread out in landfills across the region.
The volunteer search organization Texas Equusearch announced Friday it was set to launch an extensive search for Stewart. The search could begin as early as Wednesday said Texas Equusearch founder Tim Miller.
On Monday the sheriff’s office, Texas Equusearch and the landfills’ operator Waste Management will meet to go over a plan. Already an area of a landfill in Atascocita had been marked off in preparation for a search. The same was being done at a landfill in Brazoria County. Miller already put out a call for volunteers. (KHOU)
UPDATE I: Houston Authorities reverse Search Decision Again, Authorities call off search for A&M student’s body
Even with Texas EquuSearch’s offer to search for Tynesha Stewart, the authorities have called off the search.
Tim Miller, the director of Texas Equusearch, which had hoped to begin assisting in a search of an Atoscocita-area landfill next week, said he was deeply saddened they would not be able to return Stewart’s body to her family.
“We did everything we could,” he said. “It just wasn’t meant to be.”
…
Harris County Sheriff’ Tommy Thomas announced Saturday night there will be no search for the body of Tynesha Stewart, the 19-year-old Texas A&M student who was murdered March 15.
“There are no remaining body parts,” Thomas said at a press conference. “We have determined through this investigation that the defendant dismembered the victim and burned her body parts. There is no body to be found. Based on that information, there will be no search. The family is aware of this and they understand.”
Thomas, who called on local media to give the Stewart family privacy, said Timothy Wayne Shepherd burned Stewart’s body in a barbecue grill on his patio at his apartment in the 17700 block of Red Oak in northwest Harris County. (Houston Chronicle)
From the Texas Equusearch Web site …
We are deeply saddened to report that no search for Tynesha’s body will be made. Authorities state there are no remains to be found. We want to thank all of our members that worked so hard, the wonderful people that volunteered, and all the people of the entire community that expressed their concern and wanted so badly to help. The outpouring support came from everywhere and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Please keep Tynesha’s family in your prayers during this time. We want to express a very special thank you to Cindy Wisdom who selfishly devoted all of her energy and time into helping this family. She’s one of our biggest heroes. Thank you and God Bless you all.

- 5 feet 4 and 110 pounds
- Reddish-brown curly hair
- Wearing blue jeans, red jacket with reflective tape, dark blue hat
- wearing a pair of wire-rim eye glasses.
TRAPHILL, N.C. — Search teams combed mountain terrain Sunday for a 12-year-old Boy Scout who disappeared during an outing.
About 10 scouts and the adult leaders of Troop 230, from Greensboro, noticed that Michael Auberry was missing between 12:30 p.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday in Stone Mountain State Park, officials said.
The troop had gone on a hike earlier Saturday, and the boy and an adult stayed behind, said David Bauer, a ranger with the Blue Ridge Parkway. It was not immediately clear why they stayed behind.
After the troop returned and ate lunch with Michael and the adult, the troop noticed the boy was missing from camp. Searchers found part of his mess kit less than a mile away late Saturday, Bauer said. (Houston Chronicle)

Searchers find missing Boy Scout’s mess kit, footprints
WILKESBORO, North Carolina (CNN) — Authorities searching for a 12-year-old Boy Scout missing since Saturday found his mess kit near where he had been camping with members of his troop near the Blue Ridge Parkway, officials told CNN Sunday.
The missing boy, Michael Auberry, of Greensboro, North Carolina, had remained with an adult at the campsite while other scouts went for a hike, said Dave Bauer of the Blue Ridge Parkway National Park Service.
When the other scouts returned, they ate lunch with Michael who later disappeared from the camp, Bauer said.
UPDATE I: Day Two In Search For Missing Boy Scout

Brent Pennington, a district ranger with the Blue Ridge Parkway, said that crews are spending the day searching intensively in small areas and moving on to others if they don’t find anything.
“Right now we’re still very optimistic,” Pennington said.
Last night, a dive team from Alleghany County searched in the water below a dam in Doughton Park. Auberry’s parents, Kent Auberry and Debbie Hayes, said they were very relieved when the water search turned up nothing. (Journal Now)
UPDATE III: Family Asks for Prayers as Search Continues for Missing Boy Scout in North Carolina
MCGRADY, N.C. — The family of a missing Boy Scout asked for prayers Monday as the search for the 12-year-old continued in a heavily wooded mountain area in western North Carolina.
“We’re doing our best to provide moral support to the family, to the leaders of the troop,” said John Meeks, Scout Executive of the Greensboro-based Old North State Council, which governs the troop and others in the region. “They’re asking for prayers. As you can imagine, they’re concerned.”
…
Chopper and tactical tracking teams were being used Monday, and searchers were also going to check out drainage ditches. They were to focus their search in the area from where Auberry’s mess kit was found and outward.
“The most probable thing is that he walked away, went out in the woods and went to investigate,” said David Bauer, a ranger with the parkway. (Fox News)

52 year old Carolyn Gjendem has been missing since March 1, 2007. Her car has been located abandoned on the side of the road near the 9000 block of Jackson Creek Road.
The Chevy Blazer belonging to Carolyn Gjendem has been found; however, there has been no sign of the missing Castle Rock woman. It is believed that she possibly went hiking and something may have occurred.
The Blazer was found in a popular area where people like to park their vehicles and then hike off along the trails, authorities said.
At least 45 people searched the area Saturday night and Sunday with two ATV crews and two dog teams.
They said they believe she may have gone hiking in the area, but the melting snow has created difficult hiking conditions and slippery terrain with deep banks and some false creek beds. (The Denver Channel)
Missing Castle Rock woman’s car found
So far, there has been no indication of criminal activity in Gjendem’s disappearance, said Paul Miller, a spokesman and member of Douglas County Search and Rescue.
Castle Rock police filed a missing-person report Thursday, the day Gjendem was supposed to arrive at the home of family members. Gjendem’s family told police she was last seen Wednesday.
In a statement, Castle Rock police said nothing appeared out of order at Gjendem’s home, but her mobile phone was found left in her room. (Denver Post)
Sunday search fails to find missing Castle Rock woman
Nearly 50 rescuers searched a rugged hiking area in sometimes knee-deep snow Sunday for a Castle Rock woman who has been missing for four days.
But there were no signs of Carolyn Gjendem, 52, who may have gone hiking in the Pike National Forest at the edge of unincorporated Douglas County, said Douglas County Search and Rescue spokeswoman Debrah Schnackenberg
Missing hiker’s body found, Authorities yet to rule out foul play
Carolyn Gjendem, 52, was found Monday afternoon behind a boulder off in a remote area of Rampart Range Road, about six miles from where her Chevy Blazer was parked near a trailhead.
Late Monday afternoon, authorities could not rule out foul play as investigators were working the area.
“We just won’t know until they have completed their work,” said Cocha Heyden, spokeswoman for the Douglas County Sheriff’s Department.
An autopsy will be performed Tuesday or Wednesday, and authorities would likely have a positive identification by that time. (

After some delays due to in-climate weather Tim Miller and Texas EquuSearch have finally been able to start searching for missing Stacey Hazelton. Stacey went missing on May 2004 and has not been seen since. Her ex-boyfriend, James Arthur Fanning, has been tried and convicted of her murder. Despite many previous searches by law enforcement, Stacey’s body was never found.
Texas Equusearch arrived today in Bolver County, MS to begin searching for Stacy Hazelton’s body. A witness in the murder trial stated that Hazelton;d body was burned and buried in the woods near a creek in Duncan, MS. TES will be working in conjunction with the Boliver County Sheriff’s Department.
An update from the search informs us that TES brought in ground penetrating units and have found some ground anomalies. These points of interest have been probed and cadaver dogs were brought in and showed some interest. At this point there has been nothing definitely located. The Texas EquuSearch team will be working through the night as local authorities brought in lights and there is a threat of more bad weather in the area in the morning. Updates will be coming in as news comes forth.
(Lancaster on-line)
The parents of Stacey Hazelton have expressed their thanks and for Texas EquuSearch coming to help them find their daughter.
For Bruce and Natalie Hazelton, Stacey’s parents, Texas Equusearch aiding in the search efforts makes the possibility of finding her remains all that more real. “This feels great, I can’t thank them enough,” said Natalie. “They are traveling all that way to come and search. We are hopeful and thinking positive. My mother has really worked hard to get this organization involved. “Our hope is that we will be able to bring Stacey’s remains home,” she added. “They told us to remain positive, so that’s what we’ll be.” (The Boliver Commercial)
More can be found at the family website, http://www.staceyhazelton.org/
UPDATE I: Thursday 12:05PM, Tim Miller discusses results of search
According to Tim Miller, they worked until around 3:30–4:00 this morning searching for Stacey Hazelton. Tim Miller stated, “it appeared that Stacey could have been here at one point. The cadaver dogs had hits, but we did not find her. However, it was important to clear this area for possible locations of Stacey.” Although this search effort was without a conclusion Tim Miller suggested to law enforcement that maybe she may be in the area. The authorities have no idea whether Stacey was buried in the ground or just covered up. Tim Miller suggested a controlled burn of the area to rid it of the over vegetation so that the area can be searched again. This time a greater circumference surface area search. He believes the controlled burn in planned for this weekend.
We also had the opportunity to talk to Kent Schneider with the ground penetration unit. Scared Monkeys initially met Kent during the Natalee Holloway search in Aruba in 2005. Also involved in the Search for Stacey Hazelton was Dave Holloway, the father of missing Natalee Holloway.
Tim Miller wanted to personally thank the Boliver County Sheriff’s Department, those that helped and loaned equipment for the search, Kent Schneider, Dave Holloway and the other search teams that participated in the search. Tim Miller said, “It’s amazing what you can accomplish in such a short period of time when all work together for a common purpose, it all just comes together.”

Stacey Hazelton, 21, has been missing since May 21, 2004. She was last seen in Alligator, MS. Although several searches have been done since Stacey Hazelton went missing, her body has never been recovered.
A witness testified during the trial that Hazleton’s body was burned and buried in woods near a creek in Duncan, Miss. Despite several police searches, the remains were never found. Burned bone fragments were recovered but a DNA match was impossible. The Hazeltons are desperate for the closure that the discovery of her remains would bring. “We can’t leave her down there,” Mrs. Hazelton said. “That’s like leaving her behind. She needs to be home. I wish there was a different way, but still she needs to be home.” (Lancaster On-Line)
Since Stacey has gone missing, her ex-boyfriend James Arthur Fanning, Jr was found guilty of her murder. However, the fact remains that Stacey Hazelton’s body has never been recovered. Tim Miller and Texas EquuSearch will being going to Mississippi this week to help in the search. Their efforts have been hampered by weather; however, they will be joining the efforts to help being home Stacey Hazelton to her family. See the family sight, www.staceyhazelton.org.

Macomb County Sheriff Mark Hackel is holding a news conference at 11 a.m. today regarding the missing to discuss a missing Tara Grant.
Tara Grant went missing on Feb. 9. Since then, there’s been a firestorm of local and national media attention surrounding the mysterious disapperance of Grant, who’s a wife, mother of two and operations manager for a large engineering company.
Missing woman’s husband: ‘I am the No. 1 suspect’
Grant said he couldn’t verify risque e-mail exchanges purportedly between himself and a former girlfriend in late January that were turned over to authorities this week. He said some portions were familiar but that he didn’t recognize some of the entries.
However, he dismissed their racy flirtatious tone as the playful joking of former lovers.
“It was the kind of banter we had,” he said, refusing to identify the woman. (Detroit Free Press)
Husband of Missing Michigan Mom: ‘I Have Nothing to Do With It’
UPDATE I: News Conference
“We’re not going to leave any stone unturned,” Hackel said today during a news conference, without getting into specifics of the search area. “We’re hopeful that she’s still alive.”
Reserve deputies will canvass wooded areas near places like Stony Creek and nearby trails on all-terrain vehicles and horseback. The public is also asked to keep an eye out for Grant and call the Sheriff’s Office at (586) 307-9358 with leads.
UPDATE I: Search for Macomb County woman ends with no clues

Yesterday, they found her car running outside her apartment in the 1500 block of Wildflower way in South Bend. Her apartment was locked. Her purse was in the car, but she was not around. Her dog, a small brown cockapoo named Milo is also missing. (WNDU)
Vivian Borysiak Description:
- five foot one
- weighs 110 pounds
- as last seen wearing a black jacket.
If any one has any information as to Vivian Borysiak’s whereabouts call South Bend Police at 574-235-9361.
UPDATE I: Police Intensify Search For Missing Woman
Police take their search for a missing Michiana woman to the skies.
Wednesday, South Bend Police used an Indiana State Police helicopter to fly along the St. Joseph River and the area surrounding Vivian Borysiak’s home.
On Saturday, police found Borysiak’s car running outside her condo with her purse still inside.
After an extensive ground search with a K9 unit, investigators tried to get on the river Tuesday, but the frigid weather kept them on shore.
South Bend Police Capt. Phil Trent says, “The area northeast of that housing complex is undeveloped and streches all the way from St. Joseph’s High School to Saint Mary’s before there’s any development in there. So, it’s such a big piece of real estate, that’s why we’re happy to use a helicopter rather than trying to do this on the ground.”
