Two Students, Sean Cornell & Lee Walker, After Boat Captizes in Lower St. Regis Lake

Two Paul Smith College students, Sean Cornell, 20, of Manchester Center, Vt., and Lee Walker, 18, of Enosburg Falls, Vt., are missing after two canoes and a power boat capsized in Lower St Regis Lake in the Adirondacks.

The missing students from Paul Smith’s College were among six thrown into Lower St. Regis Lake just off shore from campus late Friday on the last day of classes before exams, college spokesman Kenneth Aaron said.

Four students got out of the water safely.

A state police helicopter, divers and rescuers from local fire departments were on the scene Saturday.

Aaron said state police were investigating why the boats capsized. The powerboat was not near the canoes when it overturned, he said.

UPDATE I: Body of Missing Paul Smith student, Lee Walker, Recovered from Lake

The body of one of the missing Paul Smith’s students has been recovered from Lower ST. Regis Lake.

 Officials said a New York State Police scuba team recovered the body of 18-year-old Lee Walker late Saturday afternoon.

Walker was part of a group of six students whose two canoes capsized on the lake. Another student, 20-year-old Sean Cornell remains missing. Divers plan to resume their search this morning. (News Watch 50)

One student’s body found, another missing after boats capsize

The body of Lee Walker, 18, of Enosburg Falls, Vt., was recovered by State Police divers late Saturday afternoon, Aaron said. Sean Cornell, 20, of Manchester Center, Vt., remains missing. The search was suspended for the night and was to resume Sunday morning.
 
A community gathering was planned at the college Sunday morning.

“Our entire community is deeply saddened by this tragic event,” college president John Mills said in a prepared statement. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of both these young men.”

Paul Smith’s enrolls about 850 students and offers degrees in natural resources, forestry, hospitality, recreation, business and biology, according to its Web site. The school is located 124 miles north of Albany. (WCAX-TV3)

UPDATE II: Second body found, Identified as Sean Cornell

New York State Police said they have found a second body in Lower St. Regis Lake, and have tentitively identified it as Sean Cornell, 20,of Manchester Center, Vt.

Police found the body just gefore noon Sunday.
