There are some that are pushing for Amber Alerts to include older female students. Presently the Amber Alert system is made only for children under the age of 18. Is the point of Amber to find missing people or only to segment it for missing children?
When Ali Gilmore went missing after Feb. 2, there was no emergency response or immediate coordinated effort to find her. Some say if Amber Alerts included women, the 30-year-old Tallahassee resident’s disappearance may have been solved by now.
Obviously the difference in searching for minors vs. those of adult age is the consent to go missing. There are many cases where an adult just wishes to disappear or take off. That is not the case with minors, except in the case of a runaway. However, law enforcement is responsible for minor’s actions as they are not of the age of consent to make such decisions.
We certainly understand the noble effort to want to include college age females in Amber Alerts; however, it may cause discriminatory issues. What if a male college student is abducted? The important fact is more needs to be done to prevent, search and find missing persons … no matter what age they are. Obviously women seem to be at a greater threat in these matters. Any changes for the positive for missing persons is a good thing.
Bishop Thomas Masters, Gilmore’s former pastor, hopes to change that law.
“We want it for college students and women in general,” said Masters, pastor of New Macedonia Baptist Church in Riviera Beach and president of the Palm Beach County Coalition to Stop the Violence. “We feel they need to have that kind of protection.”
State Rep. Priscilla Taylor, D-West Palm Beach, said she is researching the issue and may craft a bill to change the law.

Jonathan Berry was last seen Wednesday when he did not return from a hiking outing. Berry is a student at Brigham Young University and is from Grand Junction.
Authorities say the search was suspended over the weekend because of the number of weekend hikers in Rock Canyon. They say the tracking dogs were having a difficult time picking up Berry’s scent.
Police believe Berry was going hiking in Rock Canyon. Officers found his bike above Provo Temple on Thursday – but found no trace of him.

Authorities had hoped to use dogs over the weekend; however, there were too many hikers on the trails for the dogs to successfully pick up a scent. The search was suspended over the week, but resumed.
Officials think he was going hiking, but they have not found any signs of him on any trails.
Authorities say evidence, including a journal, shows Berry left for Rock Canyon sometime between midnight and 8 a.m. June 1. Later in the day officials found his bike in Provo.

Its official, the body found yesterday in the Bucks County, PA landfill was that of John Fiocco Jr.
New Jersey authorities on Wednesday said a body found at a Pennsylvania landfill is that of a college student missing for more than a month, and said no foul play is suspected in the death.
Authorities said there is no evidence Fiocco was stabbed or shot, and classified his death as “suspicious,” but not as a homicide at this point in their investigation.
Fuentes said that, after contacting 1,000 students and school workers, and interviewing more than 150 friends and family members, foul play is not suspected.
Mercer County Prosecutor Joseph Bocchini Jr. said it is possible authorities will never learn exactly what happened to Fiocco. He said the investigation is continuing and a final report will be due in coming weeks.

The search continues for John Fiocco, a 19-year-old college freshman who went missing on Saturday. John Fiocco attended an off-campus party with friends on Friday night where they had all been drinking.
Mr. Fiocco, of Mantua Township, attended an off-campus party with friends on Friday night where they had all been drinking, the police said. At about 3 a.m., several of them went to a friend’s room on the fourth floor of Wolfe Hall, a freshman dormitory.
When the others awoke later in the morning, Mr. Fiocco was gone, they told police. The next afternoon, one of his friends called campus police to report him missing.
Police also found traces of blood from in and around a dumpster outside a freshman dormitory at the College of New Jersey.
After finding traces of blood in and near the garbage dumpster outside the dorm, they also sent investigators to the landfills in Pennsylvania, because that is where trash from the college is taken after it is compacted in nearby Trenton.

Investigators are now searching two landfills in Bucks County, PA for the missing John Fiocco.
New Jersey state police say the search of two Bucks County landfills is expected to resume later Monday for the missing College of New Jersey student, John Fiocco.

The search continues in Narragansett Bay for the three missing students who were last seen leaving a party and getting into a row boat in the early morning hours. They have not been seen from since.
The missing students — Daniel Donahue, 20; Geoffrey Wilkes, 18; and Fandia Shloul, 21 — left a small off-campus party early Monday morning and launched a borrowed row boat in heavy fog.
Search and dive teams have continued their efforts to locate the missing students to no avail. The Coast Guard called off a rescue effort on Tuesday.
The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management is leading the search with help from the State Police and Narragansett authorities.

Coast Guard ends search for missing R.I. students
NARRAGANSETT, R.I. — The Coast Guard called off its search Tuesday evening for three University of Rhode Island students who disappeared after taking a row boat out on Narragansett Bay.
The halt came after two days of efforts by federal, state and local officials to find Daniel Donahue, 20, Geoffrey Wilkes, 18, and Fandia Shloul, 21.
Even though the searches have been called off, the three students have not been declared dead. However, if they remained in the water for any period of time the chances of survival are slim at best.
More than 175 people had participated in the rescue attempt by late Tuesday afternoon using seven boats and three helicopters. Martin called it the largest search conducted in Rhode Island waters in at least 15 years.

The Coast Guard is searching Narragansett Bay for three young adults, at least two of them college students on spring break. They are believed to have disappeared in a row boat according to reports. So far the search has turned up a rowboat, an oar, ball cap and sandal. No one as of yet has been found.
A security guard at the University of Rhode Island’s Narragansett Bay Campus heard people talking off shore about 2:30 a.m. but didn’t see anyone through the fog, URI President Robert Carothers said Monday.
About 30 minutes later, the guard heard what he thought was a moan from the same area and called the Coast Guard, Carothers said.
The search turned up a row boat just off the pier where the university docks its research vessel, Carothers said. Coast Guard officials said searchers also found an oar, ball cap and sandal.
“We’re all hoping that whoever is involved in this is on the shore,” Carothers said.
Because the university is closed for spring break, it’s difficult to track down students, he said.
