Eight Boy Scouts and three adults from Troop 217 are missing in the in the Great Smoky Mountains near Cruso, N.C. in Haywood County. They failed to return from their weekend trip.
Rescue teams headed into the mountains of North Carolina on Monday in search of eight Boy Scouts and their leaders who failed to return from a camping trip over the weekend.
Several of the troop members had cell phones, but the cell phone service in the area is spotty. Lisa Logan, the mother of one missing Scout, said she suspected the group simply got off scheduled and decided to camp out for one more night.
The search is a precaution, said Charity Sharp, spokeswoman for the Cruso Fire Department.
“There’s eight children up there, so we want to make sure everyone’s OK. There’s a possibility they could be hurt,” she said. Three adults were with the group. (Fox News)
Search Under Way for Missing Raleigh Boy Scout Troop
Lisa Logan, another mother whose son and husband are missing, said the scouts left their planned route through the forest and that she believes the group was running behind and set up camp along the route when it started getting dark.
“I think, more likely than not, they got behind in their schedule, saw they weren’t going to get out by dark, decided it was probably safer for all the boys to just stop, camp and just come out in the morning,” she said. “I feel like that is what they are doing.”

Police are looking into a lead of a man who was supposedly threatening Nailah Franklin.
Police said they were interested in a man Franklin told friends was threatening her last week, Elgas reported. Franklin was so scared, her friends added, that she did not want to sleep in her home, and she also filed a police report. Police did not comment much on that man, but said they were interested in talking to him.
“I do believe that she is alive and we just have to find her,” said Lehia Franklin Cox, Nailah’s sister. “I do think she is in distress.”
Police visited Franklin’s University Village apartment in the 1500 block of South Sangamon Street. Thursday night, Elgas reported, and Franklin Cox said several personal items were missing.
“The two computers are missing,” she said. “Both her work-issued laptop and her personal laptop.”(NBC5)

A body found Thursday near a suburban Chicago forest preserve is that of a 28-year-old pharmaceutical sales representative missing for more than a week, a family member and spokesman said.

Family: Missing Lilly rep’s body found near Chicago
UPDATE VIII: Body found but answers still missing
Her naked body was found before dawn Thursday in a densely wooded area partially buried behind a vacant building, within miles of where police found her car Saturday in nearby Hammond. A pair of earphones dangling in a tree led two police officers to her body.
An autopsy performed Friday by the Cook County medical examiner’s office did not reveal a cause of death. Chicago police, who have not ruled the case a homicide, remain the lead investigators because authorities don’t know where she died.
Her body, badly decomposed after being exposed to rain and heat, had to be identified through dental records Friday morning. But a law enforcement source said she was not shot or stabbed.
Police said they are pursuing leads in Franklin’s death. They are testing forensic evidence from her body and vehicle and reviewing surveillance video taken from across the street where Franklin’s body was found. (

BYU student, Camille Cleverley, had been missing for nearly a week and was last seen riding her bike on August 30, 2007. Her bike had been taken by two teens who stated they theought it had been abandoned earlier this week. Now the unfortunate news comes that the body of Camille Cleverley was found at the base of a cliff approximately 1,000 yards from Bridal Veil Falls on Sunday afternoon.
Another sad and tragic end, rest in piece Camille.
Cleverley’s body was discovered at the base of a cliff approximately 1,000 yards from Bridal Veil Falls on Sunday afternoon. Officials say clothing on the body confirmed that it was Camille, and that it appears she died on the mountain. Exactly what kind of injuries she sustained were not made clear, but investigators say it looks as though she fell from the cliff above.
Authorities are conducting an investigation to determine exactly what happened and they have not yet ruled out the possibility of foul play — even though there were no initial indicators of a homicide or suicide.
The area where Cleverley’s body was found is dense with thick brush and trees and is a spot where many hikers have encountered trouble in the past, officials said.
Camille’s body found
The search for missing Brigham Young University student Camille Cleverley has ended. Her body was located at the base of a cliff near the falls this afternoon.
Search and rescue crews discovered Cleverley’s body at 3:31 p.m. in some brush and trees near a rock-strewn field at the base of a 200-foot cliff about a quarter-mile east of the falls, said Utah County Sheriff Jim Tracy.
Cleverley appears to have died from injuries sustained from a fall, said Tracy. Tracy said he could not yet rule out foul play pending a full investigation. Two detectives and a medical examiner were on the scene as of 4:30 p.m. (Salt Lake City Tribune)

The plane carrying 63 year old Steve Fossett is missing. The man who has cheated death so many times with attempts to break aviation records in balloons is presently missing in his single engine plane. Searchers are looking in Nevada; however, Steve Fossett did not file a flight plan. It is hard to imagine after all the daring feats that Steve Fossett has attempted that he would be missing in a single engine plane.
The 63-year-old took off alone, with four full tanks of gas, in the small plane Monday morning from an airstrip at hotel magnate Barron Hilton’s Flying M Ranch.
He did not return as scheduled around noon, and a friend reported him missing Monday night, said Ian Gregor, an FAA spokesman.
Thirteen aircraft were doing grid searches over 7,500 square miles and were concentrating on an area of 600 square miles, said Maj. Cynthia S. Ryan of the Civil Air Patrol.
The search area is varied, ranging from high desert terrain with dry lake beds and sage brush, but also some rugged mountain peaks, she said. Gusty winds were hampering the search and could end up suspending the air search effort. (International Herald Tribune)

FAA: No sign since Monday flight scouting land speed record sites in Nevada
The 63-year-old took off alone at 8:45 a.m. Monday from an airstrip at hotel magnate Barron Hilton’s Flying M Ranch, about 70 miles southeast of Reno. A friend reported him missing when he didn’t return, authorities said.
Thirteen aircraft were searching for Fossett in addition to ground crews, said Maj. Cynthia S. Ryan of the Civil Air Patrol. The teams were doing “grid” searches over hundreds of square miles. (MSNBC)
UPDATE I: Search continues for aviation adventurer Steve Fossett
Fossett was flying in a single-engine, Citabria Super Decathlon — a plane capable of aerobatics — with tail number N240R, according to CAP. Fossett, though, had no parachute, which is required for aerobatics.
(Similar to this Citabria Super Decathlon)
There has been no sound detected from the plane’s emergency locator radio beacon, which goes off if there is a hard impact.
The aircraft, with serial number 635-80, was manufactured by Bellanca, and is registered to the Flying M Hunting Club Inc. in Yerington. (CNN)

UPDATE II: Rescuers’ fears grow for missing adventurer Steve Fossett
Fears for the missing adventurer Steve Fossett are growing tonight as rescuers continue to search in vain for his small plane that disappeared over mountainous desert on Monday.
His wife, Peggy, and his friends and relatives, were pinning their hopes on the grit and experience of the record-breaking aviator, the first man to circumnavigate the globe in a balloon.

Floyd Nelson, the father of the NBA Orlando Magic’s guard and former St Josephs University star Jameer Nelson, has been missing since Thursday. Floyd Nelson disappeared from his job on the Chester water front on the Delaware River. The 57 year old Nelson was last seen at about 10:30 am. He was supposed to rejoin a painting crew on a barge by noon. Floyd Nelson has not been seen nor heard from.
Authorities said they don’t know for sure if Floyd Nelson fell into the Delaware River but Chester’s police commissioner said a multi-jurisdictional search effort will continue.
According to officials, Nelson disappeared near the waterfront at Front Street and Highland Avenue. Jameer Nelson arrived at the search scene Friday morning as divers, the U.S. Coast Guard and trained dogs continued to look for the missing man
Chester’s lead detective said some of Floyd Nelson’s personal items were found in a barge where he was assisting a painting crew.
“His car is in the lot, keys in the lounge with lunch and medication. He has high blood pressure,” Captain Joseph Massi, of Chester detectives, said. (NBC 10)
UPDATE I: Water search ends for Jameer’s father
After two days of combing the river bottom with divers and grappling hooks, police called off the water search yesterday afternoon and declared Nelson’s disappearance a missing-person’s case.
Divers couldn’t “see their hand in front of their face” as the search for Nelson entered its second day, Massi said. It ended at around 4 p.m. with no evidence indicating that he had fallen into the water while working at Hays Tug & Launch Service.
“We promised the family we would look until there was no reason to look any further, and we’ve reached that,” said Chester Fire Commissioner James Johnson.
“Hopefully, no news is good news,” he said.
If anyone has any information on Floyd “Pete” Nelson’s whereabouts is asked to call Chester detectives at 610-447-7908.

Liza Murphy, 42, has been missing since August 19, 2007. Her husband, Joseph Murphy, told police that his wife left their home after they had an argument on Sunday. Liza Murphy has not been seen from since. Liza Murphy reportedly left with only the clothes she was wearing, no cell phone, no money, no wallet. Authorities were planning to search the Oradell Reservoir in Emerson, NJ.
The case of missing Liza Murphy has become more suspect as Liza’s husband, Joseph Murphy, apparently tried to kill himself by stepping into traffic. Now don’t we all wonder what would cause Mr. Murphy to try an kill himself and then clam up after the failed suicide attempt?
The search for 42-year-old Liza Murphy, of Emerson, took place as Joseph Murphy recovered at Hackensack University Medical Center, a day after authorities say he stepped into traffic in nearby Westwood.
Joseph Murphy suffered a broken pelvis and other injuries after the self-employed painter was hit by a fire department car. He previously stepped in front of a bus and a Lexus before the fire official’s cruiser hit him, Emerson Police Chief Michael Saudino said.
Since the accident, Joseph Murphy has been uncooperative with detectives questioning him at a hospital intensive care unit, Saudino said. (NJ.com)
Search for Emerson mom expands
Authorities grew increasingly pessimistic Friday as they stepped up their search for a missing Emerson mother.
“To be honest, it doesn’t look good at this point,” Emerson Police Chief Michael Saudino said Friday afternoon. “I find it strange that she hasn’t tried to contact her children, let them know that Mom is OK.”

Mindy Schloss, a 52 year old nurse is missing in Anchorage, Alaska. She has been missing since Sunday, August 5, 2007 when she missed a flight. Mindy Schloss was a psychiatric nurse who was always punctual for appointments. The nature of her job draws into mind that is it possible a patient may be responsible for her disappearance or was it a random act? Police do suspect foul play.
Description:
- 52-year old white female
- 5-feet, 7-inches tall
- brown hair
- gray-blue eyes
Schloss missed her Sunday flight out of Anchorage and failed to show up for any of her scheduled appointments after that, Shell said.
Schloss is a member of the local Neighborhood Watch in the Raspberry Road area. She drives a 2000 red Acura Integra hatchback, license plate DVP231, which apparently is also missing.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Anchorage Police Department at 786-8500. Or contact Anchorage Crime Stoppers.
UPDATE I: Missing Nurse, Mindy Schloss’ car found
Police in Alaska have located the vehicle of missing Mindy Schloss near the Anchorage airport. The police suspect foul play in her disappearance.
Detectives say that they suspect foul play in the disappearance of an Anchorage woman, now missing for a week. Her car was found yesterday, on Thursday, near the airport and today, on Friday, her friend is speaking out.
Friends of Mindy Schloss say her disappearance is not in her character and believe that something’s gone wrong. Anchorage Police found Schloss’s red Acura Integra near the Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport. It was parked on Old International Airport road, near the Alaska Airlines Cargo Loading area.
Detectives on this case suspect foul play and are searching her car for clues or anything that might tell them where she is. (ABC Alaska News)
UPDATE II: ATM image may be clue in nurse’s disappearance
Photo courtesy of Anchorage Police Department
Anchorage police want to talk to a man caught on an ATM camera early Sunday morning on the weekend Mindy Schloss vanished.
Police released a photo of the man Monday. They were careful not to call him a suspect and asked the public to help identify him.
Police spokesman Paul Honeman also said investigators plan to widen the search for Schloss to the Seward Highway south of Anchorage near Mile 113, where the body of a 37-year-old man was found alongside the road early on Aug. 14. Police have so far refused to say how the man, Nickline Percy Noatak, died, only that his death is “suspicious.” (Anchorage Daily News)
Police say ATM user connected to missing nurse
In the ATM video, he is wearing a dark blue or black bandana and dark colored jacket. He also is possibly wearing a backpack. Though only partial features of his face can be seen, police hope it’s enough for someone to determine who he is. Police aren’t saying if he was using Schloss’ bank card.
They also suggest he may not be the only person of interest in the case. (KTUU)
