Missing Woman Coverage a Black and White Issue?
Why does one missing woman get all the attention while another woman’s story becomes a buried headline? Jackson, Miss., Police Chief Malcolm McMillin, who has been heading a search over the past eight days for 20-year-old Latasha Norman, thinks he knows one reason why. “As far as the interest by the national media in the story, I think race probably had an impact,” the police chief said.
Family Confident Missing JSU Student Is Alive The search continues tonight for the missing Jackson state student
After one week, very few clues have turned up on the wherabouts of Latasha. She was last seen leaving an accounting class at Jackson state around 2:30 Tuesday November 13th. They say they’ve received several tips and are following up on several leads. Hinds County Sheriff and Jackson Police Chief Malcolm McMillin says, “This needs to be national news. We need the rest of the country to have the same kind of concern we have for this.”

Authorities are investigating the disappearance of three grandchildren of Southern California Rep. Gary Miller. The disappearance appears to be related to a custody dispute.
The children were reported missing about 1:30 p.m Monday from their Diamond Bar residence east of Los Angeles, sheriff’s officials said.
“We are looking into the disappearance of the children,” sheriff’s spokesman Steve Whitmore told The Associated Press.
Investigators were looking into whether the children were taken by their “non-custodial mother,” said sheriff’s spokeswoman Deputy Aura Sierra, referring to a parent without custody rights.
The children’s parents are divorced and appeared to be in a custody battle, the San Gabriel Valley Tribune reported on it Web site.

In less than one hour after the search began, the Harrison County Sheriff’s Mounted Patrol located the remains of Brandi Laurent. The location where Brandi Laurent’s body was found was less than one mile from where she lived on Kiln, MS off of Road 528 and 530. Reports are that her clothing was the first indication that this was the body of missing Brandi Laurent.
Kudos to law enforcement and the multiple search teams and their cooperation in helping the family of Brandi Laurent and bringing them answers and Brandi home. This search effort represents the best of what can happen when law enforcement and search teams all cooperate for the greater good. We spoke with TES Case Manager Cindy Wisdom this afternoon, she stated that all the search teams and law enforcement worked together to accomplish the outcome to bring closure and answers to the family of Brandi Laurent.
It probably will not be long before Brandi’s husband, Leo, will have to be doing some explaining to law enforcement. Its only a matter of time.

The case if missing 9 year old Rowan Ford is disturbing on so many levels. One account that hits home and describes the the fact that there are just no words to describe such a heinous and senseless murder of an innocent 4th grader comes from “It is the Little Things” blog. How many times must we see that our children have been failed?
Two men have been arrested; however, no names released yet.
Two men have been arrested in the death of 9 year old Rowan Ford. Rowan Ford was reported missing after her mother, Colleen Spears, returned home early Nov. 3 from a night shift at a Wal-Mart. Her body was found on private land about 10 miles south of the girl’s hometown of Stella. Authorities have determined Rowan’s death to be a homicide; however, they have not provided a cause of death yet. Authorities believe that Rowan Ford was killed in Barry County.
Two men have been arrested in the death of a 9-year-old girl whose body was found Friday in a hillside cave in southwest Missouri, authorities said. Newton County Sheriff Ken Copeland identified one as a 24-year-old male and the other as a man of about the same age. (YAHOO News)
In another case of do not leave your child unattended and always check on your children when you return home, we are presented with the following account from the stepfather.
The girl’s stepfather, David Spears, told investigators he and two male friends were with Rowan the night before until they went out around 10:45 p.m. He returned home around midnight but did not check on the girl, Copeland said.
David Spears also later told authorities that he called his mother sometime after 1 a.m. and asked to use her vehicle, Copeland has said. She took it to him about half an hour later, then stayed at his house while her son left in her vehicle for about 5 1/2 hours, Copeland has said.
Copeland also has said that Spears has not been able to explain what he did during that time. He has not been accused of a crime.

UPDATE I: Girl’s Stepdad Denies Involvement in Disappearance

Law enforcement officials have said they are bothered by inconsistencies in Spears’ account of that night and the following day.
UPDATE II: Police Arrest Stepfather David Spears for Alleged Murder of Missouri Girl

Newton County Sheriff Ken Copeland confirmed late Friday night that David Spears, 24, was arrested in the death of Rowan Ford.

Drew Peterson, the husband of missing Stacy Peterson, was officially named a suspect today by police. Although previously not named a suspect, it was rather obvious that all signs pointed to Drew Peterson as the most likely individual that police were focusing on in the disappearance of his wife.
His actions have been peculiar to say the least and it would appear according to reports that the pressure may be reaching a breaking point.
“I would say right now that Drew Peterson has gone from being a person of interest to clearly being a suspect,” in the disappearance of Stacy Peterson, Illinois State Police Capt. Carl Dobrich said during a news conference. “I would say this case has shifted from a missing-person case to a possible homicide case.”

Also today, authorities have announced that they will exhume the body of Drew Peterson’s 3rd wife, Kathleen Savio, who died in 2004.
(Kathleen Savio)
Peterson’s third wife was Kathleen Savio. Her niece, Melissa Marie Doman, said family members support the decision by the Will County state’s attorney’s office to exhume Savio’s body.
Family members have long suspected that Savio didn’t drown accidentally in her bath tub as ruled by the coroner’s office, Doman said.
“I am all for it, along with the rest of my family, because something just was never right,” said Doman. “I can’t really say who, but someone did something. I don’t think it was an accident.”

Cop Suspected in Wife’s Disappearance
JOLIET, Ill. (AP) — Authorities probing the disappearance of a police officer’s wife said Friday he is now considered a suspect in a potential homicide investigation, and that the death of an ex-wife three years ago appeared to have been staged as an accidental drowning.
Authorities received court approval to exhume the body of an ex-wife of Bolingbrook Sgt. Drew Peterson as they continued the search for his wife, Stacy, who was last seen Oct. 28.
Illinois State Police Capt. Carl Dobrich said Peterson, 53, has moved from being a person of interest in the disappearance of his 23-year-old wife to “clearly being a suspect.” Dobrich also said the case was now a potential homicide investigation.
“We have mixed emotions right now,” said Pamela Bosco, Stacy Peterson’s adoptive stepmother. “We’re sad, but we needed to move on, and this is something we’ve needed to hear for a long time.”

UPDATE I: Geraldo interviews Drew Peterson
With the media camp growing outside his Bolingbrook home, Sgt. Drew Peterson took his case to Geraldo Rivera Saturday.
Off-camera, he insisted he had nothing to do with his wife’s disappearance and complained to the Fox Network broadcaster that stress caused by media coverage has caused him to lose 25 pounds.
The interview came on a day when more than 100 volunteers — though not Peterson — scoured forest preserves and ponds looking without success for 23-year-old Stacy Peterson.
In another twist, two of Stacy Peterson’s relatives entered the couple’s home and removed the ashes of Stacy’s deceased sister, who died last year of cancer.

Cassandra Cales, Stacy’s sister, contacted EquuSearch and asked for the national organization’s help, said Cindy Wisdom, case manager for the not-for-profit group founded in 2000 to help authorities find missing people.
“We don’t enter a case unless family or law enforcement contacts us, and we don’t move forward with a case unless law enforcement agrees to work with us,” Wisdom said, adding the group has opened cases on more than 800 missing people and found 300—and the remains of 76 others. “The idea is to bring home missing persons, dead or alive.” (Chicago Tribune)
