Missing Man, John Ryan, Survives 3 Days in Back country

John Ryan, 31, of Erie was found a few hundred yards from the boundaries of the Keystone ski resort.

A snowboarder survived three days lost in the back-country wilderness by building a shelter of pine boughs as temperatures dropped into the low teens, his rescuers said.

John Ryan, 31, of Erie was found a few hundred yards from the boundaries of the Keystone ski resort, where he had gone riding alone Wednesday, said Mike Schmitt, spokesman for Summit County Search and Rescue.

“Whatever he did, he did something right to stay alive these last three days,” Schmitt said. Friends said he was in good condition

AP: Snowboarder Says He Prayed While Lost

When all else fails sometimes all you can do is pray. Seemed to work for John Ryan.

His rescuers credited snowboarder John Ryan with doing all the right things to survive three days lost in the mountains outside a ski resort area, but he doubts he would have made it through another night.

“I did a lot of praying up there, praying that I would see my family again,” Ryan, 31, said Sunday in a telephone interview from his bed at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. “I had no idea exactly where I was.”

He was found Saturday, three days after he wandered outside the boundary of the Keystone Ski Resort into an area known as Jones Gulch, at around 11,000 feet. When he didn’t show up for work at the Pump-house Brewery in Longmont on Thursday night he was reported missing by his wife, Karyn, and fellow employees.
