Convicted sex offender, John Steven Burgess, was in a California court to face charges for failing to register as a sex offender while he was living in Los Angeles, CA. According to authorities, Burgess is refusing to talk. Why would he? Does anyone think he is going to confess to a murder when all they have him on is drug possession and failing to report as a sex offender? What do police officials think Burgess is going to say, “Oh yea officer, by the way I am guilty of murder as well?” While we are on the subject, LAPD, who is searching for Donna Joe?
While Burgess has not been charged in the disappearance of Donna Jou, 19, a prosecutor said he is considered a suspect in the case. He has also refused to talk to investigators, according to authorities.
Burgess was arrested late last month in Jacksonville, Fla., after police there say they spotted him trying to dispose of a bag of crack cocaine outside a Motel 6. He pleaded guilty to a third-degree felony charge for possession of crack in Florida and waived extradition to California last week, said George Bird Jr., his attorney. (NBC San Diego)

Mindy Schloss, a 52 year old nurse is missing in Anchorage, Alaska. She has been missing since Sunday, August 5, 2007 when she missed a flight. Mindy Schloss was a psychiatric nurse who was always punctual for appointments. The nature of her job draws into mind that is it possible a patient may be responsible for her disappearance or was it a random act? Police do suspect foul play.
Description:
- 52-year old white female
- 5-feet, 7-inches tall
- brown hair
- gray-blue eyes
Schloss missed her Sunday flight out of Anchorage and failed to show up for any of her scheduled appointments after that, Shell said.
Schloss is a member of the local Neighborhood Watch in the Raspberry Road area. She drives a 2000 red Acura Integra hatchback, license plate DVP231, which apparently is also missing.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Anchorage Police Department at 786-8500. Or contact Anchorage Crime Stoppers.
UPDATE I: Missing Nurse, Mindy Schloss’ car found
Police in Alaska have located the vehicle of missing Mindy Schloss near the Anchorage airport. The police suspect foul play in her disappearance.
Detectives say that they suspect foul play in the disappearance of an Anchorage woman, now missing for a week. Her car was found yesterday, on Thursday, near the airport and today, on Friday, her friend is speaking out.
Friends of Mindy Schloss say her disappearance is not in her character and believe that something’s gone wrong. Anchorage Police found Schloss’s red Acura Integra near the Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport. It was parked on Old International Airport road, near the Alaska Airlines Cargo Loading area.
Detectives on this case suspect foul play and are searching her car for clues or anything that might tell them where she is. (ABC Alaska News)
UPDATE II: ATM image may be clue in nurse’s disappearance
Photo courtesy of Anchorage Police Department
Anchorage police want to talk to a man caught on an ATM camera early Sunday morning on the weekend Mindy Schloss vanished.
Police released a photo of the man Monday. They were careful not to call him a suspect and asked the public to help identify him.
Police spokesman Paul Honeman also said investigators plan to widen the search for Schloss to the Seward Highway south of Anchorage near Mile 113, where the body of a 37-year-old man was found alongside the road early on Aug. 14. Police have so far refused to say how the man, Nickline Percy Noatak, died, only that his death is “suspicious.” (Anchorage Daily News)
Police say ATM user connected to missing nurse
In the ATM video, he is wearing a dark blue or black bandana and dark colored jacket. He also is possibly wearing a backpack. Though only partial features of his face can be seen, police hope it’s enough for someone to determine who he is. Police aren’t saying if he was using Schloss’ bank card.
They also suggest he may not be the only person of interest in the case. (KTUU)

Kelly Gorham has been missing since Thursday, August 7, 2007 when she failed to show up at the Maine Medical Center in Portland, ME. Police are calling Kelly Gorham’s disappearance suspicious. Description:
- Gorham is 5 feet, 2 inches tall
- 140 pounds
- blonde hair
- blue eyes
- Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Michael Zabarsky at 657-3030.
Kelly Gorham, missing Alfred woman.A 30-year-old nursing student from Alfred who was last seen eight days ago was responsible and conscientious, making her sudden disappearance particularly alarming, Maine State Police said Wednesday. Kelly Gorham, who lived by herself in an apartment over a garage on Water Street, was last seen by her landlord and another neighbor at about 11 p.m. on Aug. 7, said state police Lt. Brian McDonough. When she didn’t show up for her job as an intern at Maine Medical Center in Portland at 1 p.m. the next day, a co-worker called state police. (Portland Press Herald)
UPDATE I Searchers find ‘evidence,’ but not woman
Search teams on foot and in the air fanned out over 268 square miles Saturday during a full-day search for Kelly Gorham, a nursing student missing for nearly two weeks. But the intensive hunt turned up no sign of Gorham and no immediate breakthrough in the case. Searchers found some undisclosed items in the woods in the vicinity of Gorham’s apartment, but officials downplayed their significance. “We found evidence. They’ll make assessments about what value they’ll have in the investigation,” said Lt. Pat Dorian of the Maine Warden Service. “Obviously, we did not find Kelly and that’s what we were hoping for.”
UPDATE II: Searchers find evidence but student remains missing
Wardens downplayed the significance of items found Saturday in woods in the vicinity of Kelly Gorham’s apartment. The items will be analyzed by detectives. “We found evidence. They’ll make assessments about what value they’ll have in the investigation,” said Lt. Pat Dorian of the Maine Warden Service. So far, state police detectives have conducted about 75 interviews and processed several cars in connection with the case. Investigators believe someone knows about her location, said Maine State Police Lt. Brian McDonough. On Friday, Gorham’s mother and authorities appealed for help. “All of you people, please, dig down deep to that goodness and if you know anything, pick up the phone. Help us find our Kelly,” Pauline Gorham said.
UPDATE III: Kelly Gorham Found Deceased in Northern New Hampshire
The body of Kelly Gorham was found in Stewartstown, NH. She was buried on land that belonged to her ex-fiance’s family in northern New Hampshire. Ex-fiance, Jason Twardus had denied any involvement in Kelly Gorham’s disappearance; however, all signs point to the obvious.
Carlson said Jason Twardus has been questioned by police since the disappearance, which came two months after the couple broke off their engagement. He said Twardus denies any involvement in Gorham’s death.
The day after they raided the Twardus home in Rochester, investigators headed to Stewartstown. “The father told them where he had a piece of land, and that’s where they found the body,” Carlson said.
He said he spoke to Jason Twardus around 3 p.m. Wednesday and he maintained his innocence. “I said, ‘Everything is pointing to you.’ He said, ‘I know it is and I’m scared to death.’ ” (Portland Press Herald)

54 year old Steve Harrison, the pioneering brewery’s vice president of sales of Sierra Nevada Brewing Company has been missing since Tuesday, August 7, 2007. He was last seen Monday night and failed to show up for work on Tuesday. The search continues with family friends, co-workers and law enforcement.
Description:
Flyers are posted all over the Chico area, she said, and anyone with information about his disappearance, or his whereabouts, is asked to call Chico police at (530) 897-4900. He is 5 feet 9, between 145 and 160 pounds, and has blond hair and blue eyes.
Steve Harrison, 54, the pioneering brewery’s vice president of sales and reportedly its first employee, was reported missing after he failed to show up for work. He was last seen, at work, on Monday night. His blue Toyota Prius was found Tuesday morning near the Sacramento River, west of Chico.
Butte County’s volunteer search and rescue team is leading the search, and has brought in canine units from Napa County and elsewhere, according to law enforcement sources. A sonar-equipped boat and a California Highway Patrol helicopter have also been enlisted.
More dogs will aid in search for missing man
A massive ground search for Harrison was called off Thursday after three tracking dogs alerted on a spot along the river bank, just yards from where Harrison’s hybrid vehicle was found abandoned Tuesday morning.
Searchers figured he went into the water at that location, and spent Thursday scouring a small section of the river with an underwater camera.
Larish said other dogs brought in Friday also led searchers to the same spot on the bank, but nothing was found in the water.
Larish said yet another group of tracking dogs, from outside the area, will be brought to the river today.
He said the dogs will be allowed to run the river bank up to 1.5 miles downstream. “If they alert on something in that direction, we may expand the search,” Larish said. “But if they maintain their interest in the same area as the other dogs, we’ll probably continue our efforts there,” he said. (Oroville Mercury Register)
UPDATE I: Search Intensifies for Brewery Executive Steve Harrison
The search intensified Monday for a longtime employee of the Sierra Nevada Brewing Company. But after remaining missing for a week, it now appears the search for Steve Harrison has become a recovery operation.
UPDATE II: Missing Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. executive found dead in river
Harrison was eventually spotted by a private citizen on a WaveRunner, identified by the Chico Enterprise Record as Chico resident Frank Wilson III. Cooley said Wilson was out looking for Harrison, whom he did not know, and spotted him about a half-mile from where Harrison’s blue Prius was found Aug. 6, a mile from Scotty’s Boat Landing.
“He was floating in the water under a snag,” Cooley said. “There were branches and sticks – he blended right in. It would have been a tough one to spot from the air.” (SF Chronicle)

The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children has just come up with a high tech, 21 century version of the milk carton. Instead of missing children on a milk carton, missing children on your computer screen saver. Fantastic idea.
WASHINGTON (CNN) — The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children has launched a 21st century take on milk carton advertising: a downloadable computer screensaver that flips through photographs of missing kids.
A picture of missing 3-year-old Shahid Lowther-Ray who went missing in 2002 in California.
Developed in partnership with a private software company, Global Software Applications, the rotating screens display a missing child’s picture and profile, tailored according to the region of the United States where the computer user is located
The 21st Century Milk Carton
More than 4,000 children are missing, said the Center’s executive director, Bob O’Brien. The screensaver is a great way “to get more and more people engaged” in finding kids.
Since the milk carton advertising of the 1980s, the organization has tried working with private companies who fax and regular mail the pictures. Any method to get the pictures to the public works. One in six children featured has been found as a result of someone seeing their picture.
Screensaver replaces milk carton in missing kid search
Download a photo screensaver, and potentially save a missing child. That’s the message from the child-safety group behind the Amber Alert system.
The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) released in the last week a “Missing Kid Saver,” downloadable software for people running most Windows operating systems. The application will draw on idle computer power to display updated news, information and photos on missing or abducted children from the NCMEC.
