US Coast Guard & Local Authorities Searching for Missing Steven Coble off Hull, MA
A search is under way for missing 26 year old Steven Coble who is reported to have fallen overboard out of a small aluminum boat or a canoe while fishing.
Rescue crews were searching the ocean off Hull, Mass., early Friday after two men were reported missing after they took a boat out on the water in the middle of the night. Hull, MA police and fire crews set up a rescue staging area near Gunrock Beach where they were searching for a 26-year-old man identified as Steven Coble.
According to authorities the boat capsized and one man swam toward the breakwater off Driftway Avenue. To make matters worse the water temperature this time of year is about 39 degrees.
Brad Turner, 19, of Rockland, MA, was rescued and was expected to survive. He said that he and Coble, his cousin, had taken a canoe out on the water and Coble fell in. Turner was found clinging to some rocks at Reef Point. The cousin was not wearing a life jacket. (The Boston Channel/Yahoo News)
Update: Still no sign of boater missing off Hull: Search suspended pending sighting or further information
HULL – The family of a Hull man missing after a canoe accident is hoping for the best, but after a day without a sign of him, the inevitable began to sink in. ‘‘We’re hoping he is safe, but no matter what happens we want him back, we want to get him home,’’ said Melissa Welch, sister of Steve Coble, 26.
Brad Turner, who was found some 65 yards off shore on a jetty described what happened.
Coble and his 19-year-old cousin, Brad Turner of Rockland, went for a fishing trip in a canoe Thursday at about 11 p.m. after a day in which temperatures rose to nearly 60 degrees.
What started as a lark has turned into a tragedy. ‘‘It’s devastating. It’s horrible,’’ Welch, Coble’s sister, said.
Authorities were alerted to a problem at about 2:30 a.m. Friday when an Atlantic Avenue resident called the police and said he had heard screaming across the water from his house.
Rescuers found Turner, soaked to the bone and shivering, on a jetty of rocks more than 65 yards from the shore.
Wayne Turner, Brad Turner’s uncle, said his nephew and Coble were past the jetty when a wave capsized the canoe.
‘‘Brad said that when they went out the water was like glass, but when you get past the jetty, the currents kick in and it got choppy,’’ Turner said.
He said the men were a couple of hundred yards from shore when the canoe went over.
Steven Coble was my cousin’s, Laura Turner, fiance. They were together since they were about 16. They have a beautiful daughter, Samantha Coble, who is now 7 years old. Steven has another daughter, McKenzie, who I believe is about years old. I love and miss you Steven! Rest in peace.
But to get to the point, half of your story is wrong. And I know that you got the stories and information from other newspapers and articles or whatever, but I just thought i’d let you know.
