Peter Braunstein, 42, wanted for questioning in Halloween night sexual attack on a woman in her Manhattan apartment posing as a city firefighter was captured Friday at the University of Memphis in Tennessee.
Police said fashion writer Peter Braunstein, 42, was spotted on the University of Memphis campus by a woman who recognized him from news reports about his fugitive status. She called campus police, who caught up with Braunstein, according to New York Police Department spokesman Paul Browne.
“He said, ‘I’m the person you’re looking for,’ and he stabbed himself three times in the neck,” Browne said.
Braunstein was hospitalized in critical condition. Seeing the acts that this man is allegedly responsible for, maybe he was just doing everyone a favor.
New York police had been hunting since early November for the freelance journalist, once a writer for Women’s Wear Daily. Police want to question Braunstein about the attack on a woman by a man who bluffed his way into her apartment after setting two small fires and pounding on her door while dressed in full fire gear.
He bound the woman and molested her for more than 13 hours, police said.
He has not been charged in the attack.
Investigators said they believe Braunstein was obsessed with the victim.

There had been much speculation following the murder of Kara Beth Bordon’s parents, Michael and Cathryn Borden, and the attempted escape by David Ludwig and Kara Beth Borden. What was the two teens involvement and knowldge in the crime.
Was it possible that 14 year old Kara Beth Borden could have been involved as some prematurely stated and speculated. The Prosecutors made their decisions in the double murder and aftermath that transpired as Ludwig and Kara Beth Borden, then fled to Indiana.
Prosecutors today have said that they will seek the death penalty against David Ludwig in the double murder of his girl friend, Kara Beth Borden’s, parents. Prosecutors have also said that they will not seek any charges against Kara Beth Borden in the murders. A fire arms charge and a sexual assault charge was also added.
A prosecutor said Friday he will seek the death penalty against a man accused of shooting to death his 14-year-old girlfriend’s parents, and announced he does not plan to charge the girl.
Lancaster District Attorney Don Totaro also added a firearms violation and sexual assault charge against 18-year-old David Ludwig on Friday.
Ludwig’s statements appear to have cleared Kara Beth Borden of any involvement or knowledge of the crime against her parents.
Totaro said Ludwig’s statements have exonerated Kara Beth Borden, saying she did not have any role in planning or carrying out the shooting deaths of her parents Michael and Cathryn inside their Lititz home on Nov. 14. “There was no plan or no agreement to harm her parents in any way,” Totaro said.
Man accused of killing girl’s parents to face death penalty
Totaro said the death penalty is justified because the killing occurred while perpetrating a felony, the firearms charge; that it created a great risk of harm to the couple’s children, who were at home at the time; and that more than one person was killed.
Prosecutors said Ludwig killed the Bordens after an argument over his relationship with their daughter. He was captured the next day following a high-speed chase that ended with him crashing his parents’ car.
Lancaster County District Attorney Don Totaro does not plan to file any charges as Kara Beth Borden was unaware of any plots to murder her parents.
Totaro said Ludwig’s statements have exonerated Kara Beth Borden, and convinced investigators that she did not have any role in planning or carrying out the shooting deaths of her parents Michael and Cathryn inside their Lititz home on Nov. 14.

Police are searching for 27-year-old Jason Iannazzi of Watertown, MA 14-year-old Cheynne DeCicco of Brea, CA. Her parents reported her missing earlier this month. Where did they meet? The Internet of course.
They met in an Internet chat room in September where Iannazzi originally posed a person much closer in age to DeCicco. Cheynne DeCiccohas been missing from CA since December 5.
“We are very concerned. We have a 27-year-old male from Watertown that met this girl from California, 14 years old, sometime in September. They had a meeting out in California in October. Now we have learned that she has been missing since Dec. 5,” Watertown Police Chief Edward Deveau said.
Iannazzi, who is unemployed, lives with his parents on Everett Avenue in Watertown. Police think the couple has traveled across the country together back to Massachusetts. “We have reason to believe that they are in the greater Boston area and probably staying in a low-priced hotel,” Deveau said.
The parents seemed to have been unaware as to what was going on, however, DeCicco’s friends knew she was meeting someone. Police believe the couple is in the greater Boston area. Video Available.
“I don’t believe her parents were aware. Her friends out in California were aware that she was meeting somebody. From when they first met, we don’t think she knew how old he was,” Deveau said.
A warrant has been issued for Iannazzi’s arrest for unspecified crimes in California. Anyone who has seen the couple is asked to call Watertown police.
