Could Michael Devlin have Been Involved in the Death of Dalton Mesarchik

Ever since Michael Devlin was arrested on kidnapping charges of Shawn Hornbeck and 13-year-old Ben Ownby, he has been suspected of being possibly involved in other cases in Missouri. Could Michael Devlin be a serial kidnapper, sexual predator and murderer? Could Devlin be linked to the unsolved Murder of Dalton Mesarchik?

Besides the kidnappings of Shawn and Ben, a special task force made up of federal, state and local police agencies is looking into whether Devlin was involved in other unsolved missing child cases in rural areas of eastern Missouri.

The investigation also has crossed into Illinois, where Livingston County Sheriff Robert McCarty said Wednesday investigators are looking for links between Devlin and the unsolved 2003 killing of 7-year-old Dalton Mesarchik, but so far have found nothing.

Dalton was abducted from his front yard in Streator, Ill., on March 26, 2003. A fisherman found his body in the Vermilion River the next day. (Yahoo News)

7 year old Dalton Mesarchik went missing on March 26, 2003 from the front yard of his home. The following day, Dalton’s body was located in the Vermillion River; however, no suspect was ever arrested for Dalton’s murder. Police at the time interrogated sex offenders in the area, to no avail. Dalton Mesarchik was found with his hands bound and tied.

The 2003 murder case is now receiving national exposure due to the arrest of Michael Devlin and the fact that he had abducted, not just Ben Ownby but Shawn Hornbeck as well.

Grace’s show featured the Mesarchik killing and it’s possible link to Michael Devlin of Kirkwood, Mo., who is accused of kidnapping two teenage boys, including one who was missing for four years.

Livingston County Sheriff Bob McCarty previously told the Pantagraph the department was interested in Devlin.

“We will consider any and all leads,” McCarty said earlier this month. “We will look at a time line to see if he has any ties to the Streator area in 2003.” (Pantagraph)

Eric Campbell, a Doctoral student at Purdue University, has been missing since he traveled to Texas and Mexico. Campbell was supposed to return to the US on January 18, 2007 and never arrived.

Eric Michael Campbell

Campbell was in El Paso on Jan. 12 and then arrived in Mexico at 8 p.m. that day.”

Campbell’s luggage arrived at Indianapolis International Airport after he bought a ticket to fly back to Indiana from El Paso on Jan. 18, investigators said.

But Norberg said there is no evidence the 33-year-old student ever boarded the flight.

Campbell left campus Jan. 8 to travel to El Paso en route to a wedding in Juarez, Mexico. Purdue police contacted police in El Paso 10 days later after he did not return.

A friend of Campbell’s who lives in Mexico told police he had returned to the United States on Jan. 15, and police confirmed he bought an airline ticket to Indianapolis in El Paso on Jan. 18, but never arrived. Campbell’s mother told police she has not heard from him, Norberg said. (News Sentinel)

UPDATE I: Missing Purdue doctoral student found in Mexico (Really?)

I am not really sure if we classify this as found. With Mexico’s recent cooperation in North America missing persons cases, maybe we should hold off until Eric Campbell contacts family, friends or American authorities before we claim him as found.

El Paso, Texas, police believe a missing Purdue student went back to Mexico where he is staying voluntarily.

Police spokesman Javier Sambrano said Eric Campbell, 33, checked into a hotel in Juarez, Mexico, after his flight from El Paso to Indianapolis left. Sambrano said witnesses at the hotel identified Campbell by a picture and said he seemed to be in good health. (Journal and Courier)

UPDATE II: Texas authorities account for missing doctoral student

Authorities in El Paso, Texas, said Eric Campbell, a missing Purdue doctoral student, has been accounted for.Javier Sambrano, a public informations officer with the El Paso Police Department, said no physical contact with him has been made, but Campbell, who was last seen Jan. 15, appears to be in good health.

“We have some credible sources positively identifying Campbell,” Sambrano said. “He had voluntarily checked himself into a hotel and checked out this afternoon.” (Purdue Exponent)
