Civil Law Suit Against Steven Avery Moved to Manitowoc County

Calumet County Circuit Judge Donald Poppy has ruled that the civil case brought forth by the Halbach family against Steven Avery wrongful death lawsuit must be moved to Manitowoc County. Since Steven Avery is of Manitowoc County the trial must take place there.

A Calumet County judge ruled Thursday that a wrongful death lawsuit filed by Teresa Halbach’s family against Steven Avery must be heard in Manitowoc County because that is Avery’s home county.

Halbach lived in Calumet County but was killed at Avery’s home in Manitowoc County, authorities say.

Madison attorney Dean Strang, who is representing Avery in the wrongful death lawsuit and defending him against homicide charges in Halbach’s death, had filed several motions in the lawsuit.

The Halbach family has also asked that the assets of Steven Avery be frozen. They look to seize future earnings of Steven Avery as well as his recent monies he was rewarded for his wrongful conviction, a suit later settled for $400,000.

Attorneys for the family of a photographer murdered last Halloween have asked a judge to freeze some financial assets of the man accused of killing her.

Lawyers for Teresa Halbach’s family also plan to file a motion asking that any future earnings of defendant Steven Avery be frozen until a wrongful death lawsuit filed by the family is settled.
